Australian Infront Visual Response 6

Some of you may be aware of my involvement with Australian Infront. One of the administrators of the site happens to be a person I’ve lived with for around fourteen years (this guy) so, Infront has been a BIG part of my life for the past ten years. Since leaving my teaching job as a design and technology teacher, I was asked to contribute news, attend events and occasionally help out with the administration of the site. At times it has been frustrating as all of the contributions made to the site are made on a volunteer basis and have had to take place outside of full time jobs (all of the guys who run the site do it on top of their full time jobs) but overall it has been exciting seeing what was effectively a small collaborative project grow into the large design community it is today.

Last night saw the launch of the new website, new branding and the exhibition of the sixth Visual Response. Visual Response is effectively a design competition where people are asked to contribute a  visual response to a particular word using any means desired (in an image file). The top ten are then selected by a panel of judges and the winners have their work exhibited and also win a bunch of excellent prizes. Here’s a little bit more about the competition in addition to details of the sixth Visual Response.

This year saw over 170 entries submitted and the quality of the work just keeps getting better. The top ten saw a really interesting and eclectic range of responses to the topic of “Native”; a topic that was chosen in following with the re-branding of the site and keeping with what the guys behind Infront (Aistrope and StPierre) have been striving for, in terms of the identity of Infront. Australian Infront is at core a platform for featuring the work of Aussie designers and also the means by which Aussie creatives can engage with other creatives and enhance their knowledge and skills.
Be sure to check out the rest of all the wonderful entries here.

Here are the pictures from last night, including an obligatory image of what I wore.

1st and 2nd place.

3rd, 4th and 5th place.

6th, 7th  & 8th place.

8th, 9th and 10th place.

Biddy from WBYK (the 5th most excellent person in the world), Pete from Toby & Pete, & superstar illustrator James Jirat Patradoon.

The 6th most excellent person in the world is Sonny from WBYK.

Ok Sonny. Maybe you’re the 7th.
(Pictured with Aistrope, Jason Taylor and a very sleepy Andrew Fairclough in the back. I suspect he’s sleepy because he’s so damn excellent.)

Bronze.

I’m a big fan of shiny things – clothing in particular. Because I have some serious curves, I have to be a little careful about reflective clothing. Anything skin tight is most definitely out.
I fell in love with this ASOS skirt initially because of the price (a very friendly $15); but the A-line cut is perfect for someone with plenty of junk in their trunk.
I love the idea of using a metallic item of clothing as a basic piece. I think it’s possible to do it with most items of clothing – as long as they are cut in a classic shape.

Below, I’ve paired it with my current favourite shirt; a TOME printed silk t-shirt. I’m a big fan of printed t-shirts and pick one up every season. Silk is such a great durable fabric that I know that this is a shirt that I will be able to pass on to my daughter (or sons if they so desire). I love the contrast of the reflective fabric against the beautiful print and it only made sense to add a plain tan sandal with this outfit. These one are from Andrea & Joen.

This next outfit is probably the most obvious way of wearing this skirt. A Josh Goot sleeveless shirt, Dion Lee silk blazer and Mollini pumps are a bit of a no-brainer. But I think it’s always great to have outfits like this one at the ready in case of an emergency fashion situation (I have one EVERY day).

This next outfit is a little bit more fun to me. The t-shirt reads “I Scream You Scream We All Scream For Ice-Cream” and is by The Cassette Society, while the silk blazer is Dion Lee and the shoes are Keep. I love the absurdity of wearing a blazer and a bronze skirt with high-top sneakers; but it’s something I would wear to hang out with friends – or to just look at myself in the mirror and practice my best TLC poses.

The final outfit sees my old friend, my polka dot Insight t-shirt and a cream pair of lace up Andrea & Joen sandals. Again, I love the contrast of a print against a metallic and the shoes kind of pop against the skirt and the polka dots.

You may have noticed that I haven’t included a handbag to complete these outfits. The truth is, that I’m still working on that one. But you know what? I won’t be complaining if any of you readers decide to send me one of these, or these or even one of these. I wouldn’t complain one little bit.

White Shirt.

There’s something about a short sleeved white shirt that conjures up memories of teenage boys with grey shorts and grey knee high socks. But in the past year I’ve been a little obsessed with the idea of an over-sized white shirt with elbow length sleeves.
I’m also a bit finicky about white shirts. I’m not a big fan of the peter pan collar and I prefer a collar that is sharp enough to poke your eyes out and creates a nice V line at the base of my throat. I also prefer my white shirts buttoned all the way to the top – I’m not Fabio thank you very much.

This Josh Goot shirt has been very good to me, as I bought it big enough to fit my pregnant belly last year; yet I still look and feel excellent in it now.
Pictured below I have paired the Goot shirt with a pair of white skinny Sass & Bide jeans that I’ve been dying to get back into and a pair of Witchery sandals that I wore on my wedding day along with a Witchery clutch that I am a little obsessed with at the moment. The whole look is a little bit Jil Sander-esque, which makes me very happy.

Pictured below, along with my Romance Was Born tote, (which reader you may have guessed is a favourite) are a pair of Maje jeans I picked up in a bargain bin for $20 just over a year ago. I fell in love with the colour initially, but the low slung waistband and flared shape is perfect for my curves. My yellow low cut Chuck Taylor’s come out for this outfit, but I also love pairing these pants with my green high-tops also.

The fluoro clutch comes back out for this next outfit along with a stripey Sportsgirl skirt that is reminiscent of the wonderful Prada Spring 2011 collection. The wedges are Topshop and give the whole look a bit of utilitarian edge.

Finally, I do love a crisp white shirt with a blazer and this floral silk Karla Spetic blazer is spectacular. I love wearing this blazer with boyfriend jeans, but paired with these Arnsdorf high waisted trousers gives the whole look a bit of polish and it’s something that I would wear if I had some official teacher business, like meeting with parents or a committee meeting .
I couldn’t decide on a pair of shoes but I feel like a tan or black shoe would be too boring. I love the idea of a bright blue or a grey pump to add some excitement to this outfit.
I also love the idea of starting a blog post with a shirt and ending it with the possibility that I may be in need of a new shoe.
